Volunteering at Hoghton Tower

Posted on 16th Jul 2024 | Jane

Here at Hoghton Tower Preservation Trust we are fortunate to have an amazing group of volunteers who provide our visitors with a warm welcome, share their passion for this beautiful building as they lead guided tours, engage with visitors around the house, support our events and help us research more about the fascinating history of this Lancashire landmark.

We asked one of our current volunteers, Lynda to tell us a bit more about what it is like to volunteer at Hoghton Tower.

“I am so pleased I made the decision to become a volunteer for this lovely place. I had no set role in mind when I applied and was happy to see how my skills could be best used as a year of events unfolded. It turns out that I have participated in things I didn’t even know existed! For example, I have sold tickets on the gate for the motorcycle sprint, opera in the garden and of course house and garden tours. I have also, unexpectedly, spent time with Lady de Hoghton conserving some of the beautiful artefacts in the house.

I am delighted to have trained as a history guide for the house and ghost tours as well as taking young people around the house when they visit on school trips. I have dressed as an elf for Christmas and a Tudor lady for Christmas Through The Ages. In fact, the list of opportunities available is almost unlimited!

I have to say first and foremost I have fun; I work alongside a great group of like-minded people and have learned so much from them and I know that even after four years there is so much more to come. The people who visit are a pleasure to spend time with as they are often so interested in the same things as the volunteers.

The range of opportunities gives flexibility to find something that fits my availability, and everything is so relaxed and welcoming. We are valued and seen as an essential part of the house and its history.

If you think it might be something for you, don’t hesitate to get in touch and become part of our local heritage and the Hoghton Tower story.”
