Your feet will be wearing smooth the same stone and timber trodden by the likes of King James I, Dickens and Shakespeare. Hoghton Tower’s rich history – which goes back as far as William the Conqueror – says a lot about Lancashire and England, but when told by our guides it’s an entertaining, revealing and human story, of why Shakespeare was here in the first place, how King James I ‘knighted’ a loin of beef; “Sirloin”, and exactly which ‘Peaky Blinders’ scenes were played out here.
You can gain similar insights about the world beyond the walls if you take an outside tour which explores architecture, railways, mysterious historic graffiti and archaeology.
